Ruth Katsui is a solicitor in our employment team, based at our Symonds St office. She acts for both employers and employees, and also supports our clients in the area of immigration law.

Ruth studied at the University of Auckland and quickly became fascinated with law and how it affects us in our day to day lives.

“Both employment law and immigration law stood out to me as areas which have a huge impact on an individual’s daily life, and I feel fortunate to practice in these areas. I have always been passionate about advocating for people, and I have always had a keen interest in language and communication.”

Ruth began her legal practice at a boutique litigation/general practice firm, which specialised in supporting a diverse and international client base wanting advice delivered in their own language. Being fluent in Japanese, Ruth gained a range of experience dealing with Japanese clients in various legal situations, as well as a background in litigation and immigration. Ruth then moved to Japan and spent around two years living there through the beginning of the COVID pandemic. When she moved back to New Zealand in early 2021, she found a position on the employment team at Gaze Burt – “which is where I plan to stay”.

“I enjoy practising in employment and immigration and helping people through significant and sometimes stressful times in their lives, whether it be reviewing an employment agreement for a new job, starting a new life in New Zealand, or facing difficulties at work. I also enjoy advising employer clients on how they can maintain fair and positive workplaces. I enjoy the collegiality of the team at Gaze Burt, who really exemplify our core values, and are always understanding and supportive.”

Ruth has a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese, and a LLB Hons. She wrote her honours dissertation on Zero Hour and Casual Employment Agreements. She has a N2 level in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and is a member of the Japan New Zealand Business Council.

Outside of work, Ruth loves enjoying coffee and visiting local cafes with her barista husband. She’s interested in the arts and occasionally sings with a baroque choir. She continues to have a love for travel – and can give some great recommendations for lesser known sightseeing spots in Japan.

Ruth is happy to help with your employment/immigration related query – you can contact her here.
