Introducing Beth Smith, employment lawyer.
Gaze Burt welcomed Beth to the employment law team in August.
Beth grew up in a family full of lawyers who enjoyed debating over anything and everything, so right from high school she was interested in studying law. After finishing her degree, she started her career working for a boutique litigation firm, and stayed in litigation for a number of years. She enjoyed the opportunity over that time to develop her skills in court, and at mediation and arbitrations.
Over the last five or six years Beth has been involved in sport in a governance capacity – sitting on various advisory panels with the International Hockey Federation (most recently the governance panel) and also joining the board of trustees at Harbour Sport. While she has always had an interest in employment law, many of the issues that she sees in her governance roles have a cross over with employment law. So it has been her governance work that encouraged her to specialise in employment law. She also has a strong belief it is important people are able to work in safe, fair environments, and she enjoys working through employment law to help that happen.
Outside of work, Beth enjoys anything active, whether it is chasing her two young children around, social sport or going to the gym. Having played hockey for a number of years in the national team, hockey is still a big part of her life, through her governance roles, being a parent on the sideline and supporting the national teams.
