David has been a partner since 1977. He primarily works in the commercial field and also leads our specialist franchising team. Over the past 25 years David has developed particular expertise and experience in the area of franchising including international franchising.
As our franchise partner, David’s extensive experience in franchising involves representing both franchisors and franchisees in a wide range of industries and includes SMEs as well as major corporates. | David has developed over several years valuable relationships with highly respected professional advisors and franchise lawyers in Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom and this proves invaluable to clients. David for his part is also recognised internationally and is one of only two New Zealand lawyers included in the internationally respected directory Who’s Who legal – of Franchise Lawyers. David has had articles on franchising published in professional journals including the New Zealand Law Journal. He has also presented papers on franchising at various seminars and conferences including two Auckland District Law Society seminars and Australian franchise national conferences. David is honorary solicitor to the Franchise Association of New Zealand and represents Gaze Burt as a member of the Franchise Association of New Zealand and the Franchise Council of Australia. Gaze Burt is fully resourced to handle litigation cases and is also fortunate to have well qualified mediation lawyers who are of considerable value in resolving conflict in franchise relationships. This includes training by David Newton of the Accord Group in Australia who is the Federal Government appointed franchise mediation co-ordinator for Australia. David has found from experience that the essence of good legal advice rests upon a sound knowledge and understanding of the wider commercial aspects of franchising and the importance of relationships between people.
