Opportunities for International Students - Studying in New Zealand
New Zealand is a beautiful country full of spectacular scenery ranging from flush forests and picturesque beaches to magnificent snow-capped mountain ranges.

New Zealand also hosts quality educational institutions and has some great opportunities for international students. Whether you want to study at secondary school level, attend an English Language School, or attend one of our internationally respected and recognised tertiary education providers, studying in New Zealand is a rewarding experience.

Do I need a Student Visa?

You do not need a student visa/permit if you are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia.

You also would not need a student visa/permit if you intend to study a single short course of less than three months. You would instead simply apply for a vistors visa.

What requirements must I meet to be granted a student visa?

There are 7 general requirements you must meet:

  1. Have an Offer to Study from a New Zealand educational provider;
  2. Be of good health;
  3. Be of good Character;
  4. Confirm your intent to study is genuine;
  5. Provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your time in New Zealand;
  6. Provide evidence that you plan to leave New Zealand at the completion of your course; and
  7. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months past the end of your stay.

How long can I study in New Zealand?

You can only be in New Zealand on a student visa/permit for a limited time. If you are a full fee paying student you may be granted a permit for the period for which you have paid your course fees (up to a maximum of 4 years).

Can I work while I am studying in New Zealand?

A student visa/permit holder may work part time, while studying full time. However you will need to apply to have your visa/permit varied and meet the conditions/ requirements set by Immigration New Zealand. Furthermore, if you wish to remain in New Zealand after you have completed your studies and work, you will need to make a further application under the study to work policy.
